Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has officially presented the staff of office to the new Alaafin of Oyo, Abimbola Akeem Owoade, marking the start of his reign as the paramount ruler of the Oyo Kingdom.
The ceremonial handover took place on Monday morning at the Executive Chamber of the Governor’s Office in Ibadan, the state capital. This significant event occurred nearly three years after the passing of the former Alaafin, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III, on April 22, 2022.Dotun Oyelade, the state’s Commissioner for Information and Orientation, earlier disclosed that Owoade's selection was the result of meticulous consultations and divinations conducted by the Oyomesi, the traditional kingmakers, and subsequently approved by Governor Makinde.
“This announcement brings to a close the social and legal controversies that followed the demise of Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III,” Oyelade stated, inviting citizens to support the new monarch and celebrate this historic moment for the Oyo Kingdom.The new Alaafin’s ascension comes as a unifying step for the community, with hopes of a prosperous reign under his leadership.
