Code Zone, the annual coding bootcamp aimed at empowering teens and preteens with essential tech skills, successfully concluded its 6th edition in Lagos. This year's event, themed "Diversity & Inclusion," brought together a diverse group of young participants in an inclusive environment where they imbibed problem-solving, critical thinking, and digital creativity. Held for 30 days, this year's Code Zone attracted numerous participants aged 10 to 18, who engaged in hands-on training in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Data Analytics, and UI/UX. The focus on diversity and inclusion helped participants gain a broader understanding of how technology can solve real-world challenges while bringing people together.
Code Zone is an annual coding bootcamp designed to introduce teens and preteens to the world of technology. Through interactive lessons, hands-on projects, and mentorship, Code Zone aims to empower young people with essential tech skills while fostering a collaborative and inclusive learning environment.
“The goal of this year's programme was to build technical skills and promote awareness of social issues, encouraging the youth to appreciate the value of diversity and develop a positive attitude toward others who are different,” said Mrs. Olufunke Akinloye, Founder of Code Zone for Teens & Preteens.
“While last year we focused on sustainability, this year we joined the rest of the world in increasing awareness of diversity and inclusion, with our focus being on People Living with Disabilities, narrowing it further to Autism."
During the one-month programme, Mrs. Ifueko Karibi-Whyte, Founder of the Autism Mothers in Nigeria Foundation, took time to educate the participants on Autism and how to relate to individuals with autism. “Everyone is different. When you see people living with disabilities, be kind to them, and help them if you can,” said Ifueko.
Participants learned from experts, building, interacting, and creating amazing projects aligned with their areas of interest. Code Zone 2024 included daily interactive sessions with tech professionals and individual projects designed to foster creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration, all of which were presented on the final day.
During the presentations, Mrs. Olabisi Bakare, a parent, applauded the initiative, acknowledging how much knowledge her daughter had acquired within the one month of the programme, considering she knew next to nothing about coding before joining.
Another parent, Mr. Bayo Olabisi, who had two children in the programme, remarked that he was blown away by the various presentations shared by the participants. He encouraged them to build on what they had learned to remain relevant in the future they are growing into.
As Code Zone continues to grow, the organizers are committed to expanding the programme’s reach to ensure more young people have access to technology education, equipping them with both technical and social skills. Plans are already underway for the next edition of Code Zone, with an exciting new theme that will continue to push the boundaries of what young learners can achieve in the tech space.
