THE DOTUN OLADIPO I KNEW

By Rasheed Bolarinwa

The news of Dotun Oladipo’s passing came this morning, and with it came a profound sense of loss.

Nigeria has lost a distinguished journalist, media entrepreneur and passionate advocate of ethical journalism. But for me, the loss is much more personal. I have lost a friend, an ally, a confidant and, in many ways, a brother.

My relationship with Dotun goes back to the late 1990s, when we were colleagues at The Punch newspapers. Even in those early years, there was something distinctive about him. He was calm, principled and deeply committed to the values of responsible journalism.

We shared a similar understanding of what the media ought to represent: truth, responsibility and service to the public.

Although our professional paths later took different directions, our friendship did not end.

I moved into corporate communications and banking, while Dotun continued to build his reputation in journalism. He eventually founded The Eagle Online and became President of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP).

Those different professional paths, rather than separating us, brought us even closer. We found ourselves operating from different sides of the communication ecosystem, but with a shared interest in promoting professionalism and protecting the credibility of both the media and corporate institutions.

A voice of reason when it mattered

As President of the Association of Corporate Communication & Marketing Professionals in Banks (ACAMB) and Dotun as President of GOCOP, we became partners in progress.

There were difficult moments, particularly when unprofessional elements attempted to create tension around the banking industry through misinformation, exaggeration and outright falsehoods.

Dotun understood the power of journalism. More importantly, he understood the responsibility that came with that power.

On several occasions, he quietly stepped in to douse tensions during media crises and helped create understanding when disagreements threatened to escalate.

He was not someone who needed to make noise to make an impact.

Beyond the journalist was a warm and devoted man

One memory I will always cherish is my visit to the Eagle Online office in Ogba.

With his characteristic mixture of pride and humility, Dotun personally showed me around the premises. He spoke about his vision, introduced me to members of his team and gave me a glimpse into the organisation he was building.

His wife also stopped by during the visit, and I had the opportunity to meet her.

That encounter reminded me that beyond the journalist, publisher and industry leader was a warm man who valued family and hospitality.

He believed in collaboration

Dotun never stopped advocating for journalists and media organisations.

At GOCOP conferences, he regularly extended invitations to us and consistently encouraged corporate organisations to maintain relationships with credible media platforms.

He believed that the media and corporate sector did not have to operate as adversaries. There could be collaboration, mutual respect and shared growth.

That philosophy was one of the reasons our relationship remained strong.

ACAMB, under my leadership, also welcomed opportunities to engage with GOCOP and the wider media community because we understood that a healthy relationship between the media and corporate institutions ultimately serves the public interest.

Six years ago, we celebrated his 50th

I was privileged to celebrate Dotun’s 50th birthday with him and his circle of friends in Lagos six years ago.

It was one of those occasions that now carries a different meaning because memories that once seemed ordinary suddenly become precious.

We remained in touch after that celebration, meeting at conferences, seminars and other industry events.

I frequently sought his counsel on media-related matters. With his extensive network and deep understanding of journalism, Dotun was someone I could call when I needed advice, clarification or intervention.

Not once did he turn me away.

He was generous with his time, his knowledge and, perhaps most importantly, his relationships.

A difficult void to fill

Today, I am mourning more than a former colleague.

I am mourning a trusted ally, a comrade and a brother.

Dotun Oladipo’s departure has left a void that will be difficult to fill, particularly within a media industry that benefited from his voice, experience and commitment to professionalism.

His contribution went beyond the stories he published or the organisation he built. He invested in people, relationships and the ideals he believed the media should uphold.

To his family, especially his beloved wife and children; to his brother, Tunde, my former classmate, journalism colleague and banking associate; to the entire GOCOP family; and to the Nigerian media community, I extend my deepest condolences.

Dotun lived a life of impact, friendship, service and integrity.

His footprints are indelible. His legacy will endure. And for those of us fortunate enough to have known him personally, his memory will remain a source of inspiration.

I will remember the Dotun Oladipo I knew—the journalist who believed in responsibility, the colleague who became a friend, the ally who stood for professionalism, and the brother who was always willing to help.

May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace.
