The Delta State Government and the wider public are mourning the death of Chief (Mrs.) Love Shimite Winifred, Special Adviser to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori on Trade and Export, whose sudden demise has sparked outrage, sorrow, and an active police investigation.
Initial reports indicated that the renowned trade and export expert allegedly died following a domestic violence incident involving her husband, Pastor David Favour. Several online posts by friends, colleagues, and activists—including Harrison Gwamnishu and Victor Ojie (Wong Box)—pointed fingers at her husband, alleging foul play.
However, in a bid to clarify the unfolding story, the Delta State Police Command has provided an official update, confirming Shimite’s death and shedding more light on the situation.
In a statement issued by SP Bright Edafe, the Police Public Relations Officer, the command revealed that Pastor David Favour was not arrested but placed in protective custody after he reported the death of his wife and expressed concerns over threats from the deceased’s family. “He (the husband) was the one who called to report that his wife died early this morning and that he was receiving threats from her family, who feared he might be attacked. It was on this basis that we went to his house and brought him in for his own safety,” said SP Edafe.
He further explained that the family of the late Shimite Winifred had lodged a formal complaint, alleging that her husband may have been involved in her death. As a result, the police have opened an investigation. “We are currently investigating. In situations like this, only an autopsy can determine whether the death was natural or due to other causes,” Edafe added.
Until her death, Shimite served as Coordinator of the Delta State UNIDO Centre and was the focal person for the Federal Government’s Social Investment Programme in Delta State. She also produced the celebrated TV series, African Pot, which promoted African cuisine and culture.
Her professional affiliations include being a member of the USAID/NEXTT Steering Committee, FESECA’s Board of Directors, and a contributing editor in top publications including Daily Trust and Leadership.
News of Shimite’s death has ignited strong reactions across social media. Advocates for women’s rights are demanding a thorough investigation, urging women to leave abusive marriages and prioritizing their safety.
“Marriage is not by force. It’s better to lose a marriage than lose your life,” said Comrade Victor Ojie in a post that has since gone viral.
Shimite’s aide, Tameta Sunday, in an emotional post, alleged that her husband was responsible, writing: “It’s very difficult to type RIP boss… a pastor with a gentle look as a husband cut all the positive plans we had together.”
As investigations continue, the focus now shifts to the autopsy report and police findings which will be pivotal in determining the next steps.
The Delta State Government is yet to issue an official statement, but sources within the state cabinet say her death has left a significant void in the administration’s trade and investment initiatives.
