DRAMA AS OSHIOMHOLE FACE BACKLASH OVER REMARKS ON EDO GOVERNOR’S WIFE'S CHILDLESSNESS
Adams Oshiomhole, the senator representing Edo North, has sparked outrage with a controversial remark regarding Betsy Obaseki, the wife of Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki.
The incident occurred during the People's Democratic Party (PDP) governorship campaign in Esan South-East LGA at the Ubiaja Township Stadium.
At the event, Betsy Obaseki introduced Ifeyinwa Ighodalo, the wife of PDP governorship candidate Asue Ighodalo, to the crowd, noting that Ighodalo was the only candidate in the upcoming election with a wife. She emphasized that supporting a candidate with a wife would translate to women’s empowerment.
However, Oshiomhole, in an interview with journalists, responded sharply to Betsy’s remarks, expressing his shock at her statement and making a personal attack.
Oshiomhole said, “I was shocked yesterday to see Mrs. Obaseki, the first lady, saying our candidate has no wife. I’m sorry she had to say that because here is a woman who has no child. Between him [sic] and Obaseki, they are childless. They are not even ready to adopt.”
Oshiomhole’s comments have led to widespread criticism on social media. Many users on X (formerly Twitter) have condemned his remarks as below the belt and lacking in civility, with some describing them as petty and inappropriate for a public figure of his stature.
The backlash highlights the sensitive nature of personal attacks in political discourse and the expectation for a higher standard of respect and decorum.
