… As They Restate Commitment To Environmental Sustainability

A major milestone in Nigeria's efforts to save the environment was reached recently at Alpha Beach, which is in the centre of Lekki, Lagos. The event was organized by the Sterling One Foundation and involved other partners.

The goal of Saturday, December 16, 2023's National Clean-Up Day was to address the widespread problem of plastic pollution and promote an ethical waste management culture.

Mrs. Olapeju Ibekwe, the Chief Executive Officer of the Sterling One Foundation, stressed the vital importance of proper waste management to an audience that comprised Sterling Bank employees, ardent volunteers, and media representatives from several online news outlets.

Reiterating the foundation's 2007 pledge to environmental sustainability, she emphasized its commitment to renewable energy programs.

“The efforts made today are not merely about tidying up our immediate surroundings but about safeguarding our well-being and that of future generations,” she added.

Mrs. Ibekwe underscored the interconnectedness between environmental conservation and individual well-being. Drawing attention to alarming statistics predicting increased plastic pollution in oceans by 2050, the message resonated deeply, highlighting the urgent need for concerted action.

The event aimed not only at cleaning the beach but also served as a platform to raise awareness and educate Nigerians on proper waste management practices.

‘The nationwide exercise, in 27 locations, included Lagos and the six geo-political zones of the country, although the last for 2023, marks the beginning of an ongoing movement.

During the event, staff, partners and volunteers of the foundation carried out the exercise simultaneously across the locations nationwide.

“The Foundation’s unwavering commitment and ambition foresee more such impactful initiatives in the future, spreading awareness and effecting tangible change nationwide”, she said.
