The deceased wife of Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, Chief Whip of the outgoing Senate, Mrs. Ifeoma Ada Kalu was buried in the United States of America yesterday. Ifeoma Kalu (Nee Menakaya) passed away on Monday, April 3, at the age of 61, in the US.

The former Abia State Governor has however had to clarify the decision to bury his wife abroad - confessing that people in their villages are fighting him over the act. Sen. Kalu and his family held an open casket viewing ceremony for the deceased at McEwen Funeral Service-Pineville Chapel, North Carolina on Tuesday. He was seen with his children and family members wearing black attires to mourn the demise of the deceased.

Yesterday, paying tribute to the former Abia State First Lady at New Home AME Zion Church in South Carolina, Kalu said the decision was made by Ifeoma when she was alive.

“My Lord Bishop, I want to thank you for holding this mass today. This is her chosen church because I am a Catholic; my children are also Catholics. We would have buried her in a Catholic Church but this is what she wanted. She told her children that when she dies, she should be buried here. This is why we are here. We would have flown her back to Nigeria. People in our villages are fighting us about why we didn’t bring her corpse home, but we shall overcome all like we’ve done in the past,”

Kalu married Ifeoma Ada Menakaya in December 1989 in his hometown of Igbere, Abia State. He has two children namely Neya and Zina Uzor Kalu.
