A brief history of International Women’s Day
Observed globally on March 8, International Women’s Day has its roots in the early 20th-century labour movement in North America and Europe. The first official celebration took place in New York on February 28, 1909, organised by the Socialist Party of America.

In 1910, Clara Zetkin, a prominent women’s rights advocate, proposed an International Women’s Day at the Second International Socialist Women’s Congress in Copenhagen, leading to the first global observance in 1911.

The day was later formally recognized by the United Nations in 1977 and has since evolved into a global platform for advancing gender equality, inclusion, and women’s empowerment.

Through initiatives like this Instagram Live session, Mutual Benefits continues to demonstrate its commitment to empowering women with financial knowledge that can transform lives.
